The Importance of Diversity and Inclusion in the Workplace
Diversity and inclusion in the workplace are crucial components of any successful business. Companies are increasingly recognising the importance of creating an inclusive work environment that reflects the diversity of the communities they serve.
The LGBTQ+ community has long been marginalised in the workplace, but businesses are starting to take notice of the increasing recognition and awareness of their rights. An inclusive and diverse work environment not only makes for a more productive and engaged workforce but also helps businesses to attract and retain top talent. In fact, businesses identified as more diverse and inclusive are 35% more likely to outperform their competitors. Source: McKinsey
But creating an inclusive work environment doesn’t happen overnight. It requires a concerted effort to educate employees on the importance of diversity and inclusion and to develop policies and practices that support these values. Companies can begin by making resources available for the LGBTQ+ community, by providing support on aspects and issues they may face. Regular training can be provided company-wide to educate people about LGBTQ+, creating further awareness and understanding of the community.
PRIDE month provides an excellent platform for businesses to demonstrate their support to the community. Simply updating your logo to pride colours is not enough. Businesses are now recognising that to really effect change educating their people is vital many employers are hosting events, providing meaningful, informative resources, and highlighting employees who identify as LGBTQ+, sharing their stories and experiences associated with it.
In addition to the benefits for the business and its employees, an inclusive work environment is also crucial for creating a more equitable society. When businesses support diversity and inclusion, they help break down the barriers that marginalise certain groups. This can lead to a society and culture being implemented where everyone can thrive.
